Common questions
- Does it really work with no signal?

Yes. Once a region is downloaded, the map, search, routing and turn-by-turn all run on the device. Put the phone in airplane mode and use it — nothing changes.
- How big is a region, and where do I get one?

Every region is a single file: a small province is tens of megabytes, a large one a couple of gigabytes. The Maps page lists every region with its real size and build date; you download it inside the app, on Wi-Fi.
- My download stopped part way. Do I start again?

No. Downloads resume from where they stopped, so reopening the app and starting it again picks up the rest. If a download fails its hash check, the file is discarded and re-downloaded rather than used.
- The map looks empty. Is the download broken?

Almost certainly not. Side streets, paths and buildings are drawn only when you are zoomed in far enough to read them — an overview of a whole province shows highways and water on purpose. Zoom in and the detail appears.
- Can I search for a street address?

You can search by name — a town, a lake, a park, a street, a named business — and matching starts from the beginning of the name, so get the first few letters right. Search by house number is planned and not in the app yet. To route to a specific spot, find the street and then press and hold the map where you want to go.
- Why is there no campground in the search results?

Things with no name of their own — pit toilets, boat launches, picnic sites — are deliberately kept out of search, because they would all share one name and search would answer with an arbitrary one. Use Nearby, which answers by category and by distance from you.
- Does it track me or use data in the background?

No. There is no account, no telemetry and no ads, and fetching the list of regions and downloading one are the only things the app ever does over the network. Your location and your favourites stay on the device.
- Can I plan a trip that crosses a provincial boundary?

Not yet — that one is planned. A route is planned inside a single region today. You can install both regions and switch between them; you just cannot get one route across the boundary.
- Is there a French version? CarPlay? Android Auto?

All three are planned and none is in the app today. The interface is English for now, and the app runs on the phone's own screen.
- How do I get my favourite places off the phone?

Export them as GPX and open the file anywhere — a GPS unit, another maps app, a spreadsheet. GPX import works the same way in reverse, for waypoints, routes and tracks made elsewhere.
Report a map problem
A missing road, a lake with the wrong name, a campground that closed three years ago: those are not bugs in the app, they are facts in the map. Every region is built from OpenStreetMap, so the fix belongs there — and once it is there, it is fixed for everyone using that data, not just for you.
- Go to openstreetmap.org/fixthemap, which walks you through reporting or correcting something. An account is free.
- Either leave a note describing what is wrong, or edit the map yourself — for something simple like a name or a closed business, editing is the faster of the two.
- The change is live in OpenStreetMap almost immediately. It reaches you the next time we rebuild that region and you download the new build, which the Maps page dates.
